At the Elementary Level . . .
Our school
district currently has eighteen elementary
schools, which house 9,206 students in grades
kindergarten through six. Kindergarten students
attend full day sessions and must reach
the age of five before August 1 in order to
enroll.
Our elementary schools
offer a comprehensive curriculum, aligned in
conjunction with current national and state
standards. Basic skill instruction,
higher-level thinking and reasoning skills are
developed through our district-wide literature
based reading program.
Each elementary school
houses a state of the art computer lab staffed
with trained personnel and equipped with
computers, and access to the Internet.
Our
elementary libraries provide interactive CD ROM
computer technology, and electronic
circulation. Information literacy skills,
locating, using, and communicating information
effectively are taught. Information literacy
embraces library research, analysis, evaluation,
problem solving and critical thinking. Our
library media specialists integrate lessons with
the language arts, science, social studies,
math, health and technology lessons that
students are learning in their classroom. Each
library provides flexible access, giving
students and teachers the ability to use the
Media Center and schedule with the library media
center staff at any time. Working
collaboratively, teachers and the library media
specialist prepare and teach lesson plans
customized for each class. This collaborative
effort must focus on meeting the learning needs
of students, both within and beyond the walls of
the library media center. In this way each
student receives instruction and practice in the
information skills appropriate for their grade
level.
